The best no-annual-fee travel credit cards
Every open US card that charges no annual fee and prints a rate on travel, flights, hotels or transit that pays anywhere in that category — ranked on that rate. Nothing to earn back means every cent is upside; the trade is what these cards mostly don't carry.
U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card leads at 4.0¢ back per dollar on its strongest travel category — 4x on travel, with no annual fee. Norwegian Cruise Line World Mastercard follows at 3.0¢.

What these actually pay on a year of transit
A rate is a promise about one dollar. This is the same ranking run over 12 real transit charges totalling $396 — our sample year — scored one charge at a time by the same engine the app uses on your own statement. Caps, category rules and point values all apply; nothing is annualised or rounded up.
| Card | Earned on $396 | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| Navy Federal More Rewards American Express | $12 | 3.00% |
| United Gateway Card | $10 | 2.50% |
| Amazon Visa | $8 | 2.00% |
| Prime Visa | $8 | 2.00% |
On this spending the gap between top and bottom is $4 a year — the effective rate, after caps and point values, runs from 2.00% to 3.00%. Your own charges are what matter, and the app scores those rather than a sample.
How we rank
One arithmetic rule, applied by code to our maintained card database. There is no editorial pick, no hand-ordering and no sponsored slot.
- Printed earn rate. The best rate each card prints on travel, flights, hotels or transit that pays anywhere in that category — not its strongest rate overall. A card whose biggest number is on dining does not lead a travel page because of dining, and a rate that only pays through an issuer's portal or on one airline is not a travel rate at all, so it is never ranked here.
- Conservative point value. That rate is multiplied by our conservative mid-range value for the currency it pays, which is why a hotel card printing a large multiplier can finish below a plain cash-back card. Every point value we use, published →
- Annual fee. Printed against every card and used to break ties. The best fee-free card in this pool is U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card at 4.0¢ per dollar. We never net the fee out of the rate for you — whether it is worth paying depends on how much you spend.
- Caps and limits. Where a card's headline rate stops after a spending cap, that cap is on the card's own page and in the relevant category guide. This ranking uses the printed rate, so a heavily capped bonus should be checked against the cap before you act on it.
- Pool and cutoff. 221 open US cards are in our database; 10 of them are no-annual-fee cards that print a travel rate and qualify. All 10 are ranked above — that is under the 24-card cutoff, so nothing was left off.
- Rotating and pick-your-own categories. Kept out of the headline ranking, because they only pay in the right quarter or with the right election. Issuer-travel-portal-only rates are excluded for the same reason: they pay only if you book through the portal.
- Commission. The ranking code has no access to which cards pay us a commission — the ordering function never reads the affiliate file. Any apply link is attached after the order is already fixed, so it cannot move a card up or down. How that works.

The honest caveat
What a no-fee travel card usually lacks is the insurance, the lounge access and the transfer partners a fee card has, and several of these pay in a currency that redeems at a fixed cent no matter how you use it. The rate is only one column — check the card's own page for what its points can become.
Common questions
What's the best travel card with no annual fee?
U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card prints the highest travel-category rate of any fee-free card in our database: 4x on travel, worth 4.0¢ per dollar at our conservative value for U.S. Bank points.
Why are some no-fee airline and hotel cards missing?
Because their headline rate only pays with their own airline or hotel. A card has to print a travel, flight, hotel or transit rate that pays ANYWHERE to be ranked here; a brand-locked rate is real money at that brand and nothing elsewhere, so it is listed on that brand's own page instead of being ranked as a travel rate.
How many no-annual-fee cards that print a travel rate are ranked here?
10. 0 of them charge an annual fee and 10 do not. Card data was last verified 2026-09-15.
Is there a no-annual-fee option?
Yes — U.S. Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature Card charges no annual fee and pays 4.0¢ back per dollar at 4x on travel, ranking #1 here. A free card that matches your spending beats a fee card that doesn't.
Does a card paying you a commission rank higher?
It can't. The function that produces this order reads printed earn rates, point values, annual fees and caps from our card database and nothing else — it has no access to which cards pay us. Apply links are attached after the order is fixed.
