Best credit card for gym memberships
Fitness is a real but rare bonus category: two cards in our database print a flat gym rate, and a handful more let you elect fitness as a bonus category yourself.
Only 2 cards in our database pay a bonus that applies at gym memberships — World of Hyatt Credit Card at 3.0¢ per dollar. Everything else earns its base rate, where Capital One Venture Business leads at 2.6¢.

Cards with a bonus that applies at Gym memberships
Ranked by real value — the printed rate multiplied by our conservative value for the currency it pays, so a big multiplier in a weak currency can't win on the number alone. The "what the rate covers" column is the issuer's own printed wording, because that is what decides whether the bonus reaches this merchant at all.
| # | Card | Value | Rate | What the rate covers | Cap | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | World of Hyatt Credit Card Chase |
3.0¢/$ | 2x | fitness club and gym memberships | uncapped | $95 |
| 2 | World of Hyatt Business Card Chase · business |
3.0¢/$ | 2x | Fitness club and gym memberships | uncapped | $199 |
Cards that can reach Gym memberships through a rotating or chosen category
14 cards can pay up to 5.0¢ per dollar here — but only in the right quarter, or once you've elected the category and kept it there. Powerful when you'll actually manage it, worth nothing when you won't, which is why we rank them separately from printed rates: Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Secured, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards for Students, Chase Freedom Flex, Citi Strata℠ Card, Discover it Balance Transfer, Discover it Cash Back, and 6 more.
The best flat-rate cards for gym memberships
General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what gym memberships earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?"

Two printed rates, and they're both in hotel points
The only cards in our catalog with a standing fitness-club rate pay in a hotel currency, so the headline multiplier and the actual return are different numbers. The value column above does that conversion at our conservative point value — which is what makes the ranking meaningful rather than a multiplier beauty contest. Whether those points are worth holding for you depends on whether you'd ever redeem them at a hotel, and that's a genuinely personal answer.
Pick-your-category cards are the stronger play
Several cards let you choose your own bonus category, and fitness is on the list. Those are listed below the table because the rate isn't automatic — you have to elect it, and on some cards re-elect it periodically. For a household paying two gym memberships plus classes, electing fitness on a 5% card is likely the single highest-return option on this page. For someone who'll never touch the setting, it's zero.
Boutique studios may not code as a gym
"Fitness clubs and gym memberships" is a merchant-category classification, not a description. A big-box gym almost certainly codes that way. A boutique studio, a class-pack app, a personal trainer or a climbing gym often don't — they can land under entertainment, professional services or plain retail. If a specific membership matters to your card choice, run a small charge first and see where it lands before assuming.
The honest caveat
Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
