Best credit card for paying rent

Rent is the largest line in most budgets and the hardest to earn on. One card in our database earns points on rent without a fee; everywhere else, the portal's processing fee is larger than anything a card pays back.

Only one card in our database pays a bonus that applies at rent — Bilt Blue Card at 1.8¢ per dollar. Everything else earns its base rate, where Capital One Venture Business leads at 2.6¢.

Cards with a bonus that applies at Rent

Ranked by real value — the printed rate multiplied by our conservative value for the currency it pays, so a big multiplier in a weak currency can't win on the number alone. The "what the rate covers" column is the issuer's own printed wording, because that is what decides whether the bonus reaches this merchant at all.

The best flat-rate cards for rent

General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what rent earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?" The net column subtracts a typical 2.9% rent-portal card fee, which is the number that actually decides this.

The processing fee eats the rewards, every time

Landlords and rent-payment portals that accept credit cards nearly always add a processing fee — commonly around 2.5% to 3% of the payment. Put a 2% card against a 2.9% fee and you have paid 0.9% of your rent for the privilege of earning rewards. The "net after the fee" column below does that subtraction: on a $2,000 rent payment, a 2.6¢-per-dollar card nets you a loss of roughly $6 a month, not a gain. This is the single most common way people talk themselves into a bad deal, because the rewards are visible and the fee isn't.

The one card that earns on rent without the fee

The exception in our catalog is the Bilt card, which is built specifically to pay rent by card with no transaction fee. Read the earn rule carefully, though — it's not a flat rate. The rate scales with how much everyday spending you put on the card relative to your housing payment, so the advertised number is a ceiling you reach only by also routing normal spending through it. The rate shown in the table is the printed figure from our catalog; the note beside it is the condition attached to it.

If ACH is an option, take it

Most rent portals accept bank transfer for free. Free beats a 2% rebate minus a 2.9% fee every single time, and it isn't close. Paying rent by card makes sense in exactly two situations: you hold a card designed for it, or you're clearing a welcome-offer spend requirement where the bonus is worth several times the fee — and even then, only once.

The honest caveat

Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
