Best credit card for Macy's

Macy's own cards pay Macy's Star Money at the entry Silver tier by default. At our value for Star Money, that is roughly what a good flat-rate card pays anyway, and the flat-rate card works everywhere.

No card in our database pays a bonus category on Macy's. That makes this a base-rate question, and Capital One Venture Business leads at 2.6¢ back per dollar.

The best flat-rate cards for Macy's

General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what Macy's earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?"

What the Macy's cards actually pay

Both Macy's cards earn Star Money at Macy's, and new accounts start at the Silver tier, which is the rate the table above uses. Higher tiers depend on how much you spend at Macy's each year. The Macy's store card only works at Macy's; the Macy's American Express also pays bonuses on dining, gas and groceries.

Why a flat-rate card is close

Star Money only spends at Macy's. Valued at face, the Silver-tier rate is similar to a strong flat-rate card, which pays in cash you can use anywhere. The Macy's cards pull ahead mainly through promotions and higher tiers, which this page does not assume.

The honest caveat

Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
