Best credit card for Whole Foods

Whole Foods is owned by Amazon but codes as an ordinary U.S. supermarket almost everywhere — which means your grocery card usually works, and the two Amazon cobrands name the chain outright.

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express leads at 6.0¢ back per dollar at Whole Foods — 6%, against a $95 annual fee. AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature follows at 5.0¢.

Cards with a bonus that applies at Whole Foods

Ranked by real value — the printed rate multiplied by our conservative value for the currency it pays, so a big multiplier in a weak currency can't win on the number alone. The "what the rate covers" column is the issuer's own printed wording, because that is what decides whether the bonus reaches this merchant at all.

Cards that can reach Whole Foods through a rotating or chosen category

13 cards can pay up to 5.0¢ per dollar here — but only in the right quarter, or once you've elected the category and kept it there. Powerful when you'll actually manage it, worth nothing when you won't, which is why we rank them separately from printed rates: Bank of America Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Secured, Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards for Students, Chase Freedom Flex, Citi Strata℠ Card, Discover it Balance Transfer, Discover it Cash Back, and 5 more.

If you don't hold one of those: the best flat-rate cards

General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what Whole Foods earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?"

Two cards name Whole Foods; everything else treats it as a supermarket

Chase's two Amazon cobrands print Whole Foods Market in their own terms, covering U.S. stores and wholefoodsmarket.com. Every other card in the table is there because Whole Foods codes as a U.S. supermarket, which is what a grocery bonus is written against. That's a mapping we're making, not a promise the issuer printed — merchant coding is set by the payment networks and can change, and a Whole Foods counter inside another retailer may not code as a supermarket at all.

The caps are where grocery cards quietly stop being grocery cards

Several of the highest grocery rates run out. Look at the cap column: a 6% supermarket rate capped at $6,000 a year is worth at most a few hundred dollars, and every dollar past the cap earns the base rate. If your household grocery spending is well above a card's cap, a slightly lower uncapped rate can pay more over a year — which is the sort of thing the optimizer settles by running your real charges rather than the headline number.

The honest caveat

Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
