Best credit card for utility bills

Utilities are recurring, predictable and almost entirely unrewarded. Exactly one card in our database prints a flat utilities rate — and it's worth less than an ordinary flat-rate cash-back card.

Only one card in our database pays a bonus that applies at utility bills — IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card at 1.5¢ per dollar. Everything else earns its base rate, where Capital One Venture Business leads at 2.6¢.

Cards with a bonus that applies at Utility bills

Ranked by real value — the printed rate multiplied by our conservative value for the currency it pays, so a big multiplier in a weak currency can't win on the number alone. The "what the rate covers" column is the issuer's own printed wording, because that is what decides whether the bonus reaches this merchant at all.

Cards that can reach Utility bills through a rotating or chosen category

7 cards can pay up to 5.0¢ per dollar here — but only in the right quarter, or once you've elected the category and kept it there. Powerful when you'll actually manage it, worth nothing when you won't, which is why we rank them separately from printed rates: Chase Freedom Flex, Discover it Balance Transfer, Discover it Cash Back, Discover it Student Cash Back, NHL Discover it, Max Cash Preferred (Elan), Venmo Credit Card.

The best flat-rate cards for utility bills

General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what utility bills earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?"

A printed utilities rate isn't automatically a good one

This is the clearest example on the whole site of why we rank by real value instead of the headline multiplier. One card in our catalog prints a utilities bonus. Multiply its rate by our conservative value for the points it pays and it lands below what a plain flat-rate cash-back card returns on the same bill. A bigger number in a weaker currency is still less money. If we ranked by the multiplier the way most sites do, that card would top this page — and you'd be worse off for following it.

Pick-your-category cards are the real answer

The cards that can genuinely pay a strong rate on utilities are the ones where you elect the category yourself. Those are listed separately below, because the rate is only real once you've made the election and only for as long as you keep it there. That's a meaningful bonus for someone who'll set it and leave it, and nothing at all for someone who won't.

Check for a convenience fee before you set up autopay

Many utilities — municipal water and sewer especially — pass card processing costs through as a convenience fee, sometimes a flat charge per payment rather than a percentage. A flat $2.50 fee on a $60 water bill is 4%, far more than any rate here. Bank draft is usually free. Check the biller's payment page before routing a bill to a card for the rewards.

The honest caveat

Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
