Best credit card for wedding expenses
There is no wedding bonus category. But a wedding is often the one time a household can clear a large welcome-offer spend requirement without buying anything it wouldn't have bought — and that is worth more than any earn rate on this page.
No card in our database pays a bonus category on wedding expenses. That makes this a base-rate question, and Capital One Venture Business leads at 2.6¢ back per dollar.

The best flat-rate cards for wedding expenses
General-purpose cards ranked by the real value of the rate they pay on everything — what wedding expenses earns when no bonus category applies. Store cards and single-retailer cobrands are excluded here: rewards you can only spend at one chain can't answer "what should the rest of my spending go on?"

The bonus, not the rate, is the prize
Weddings concentrate a year's discretionary spending into a few months. That's the ideal shape for a welcome offer: a one-time bonus worth several hundred dollars for spending you were going to do anyway. Earning 2% instead of 1.5% on a $30,000 wedding is worth about $150. Clearing one good welcome bonus with the same spending is frequently worth several times that. Open the card before the deposits go out, not after.
Some of it isn't in the "everything else" bucket
A wedding isn't one category. Catering and the rehearsal dinner often code as dining; the venue may code as a hotel; flights and rooms for the honeymoon are travel. Where a line item lands in a real bonus category, use the card that wins that category rather than the flat-rate card — see dining, hotels and travel. The flat-rate ranking below is for everything that doesn't code as anything: the dress, the photographer, the flowers, the deposits.
Vendor surcharges and deposit timing
Small vendors frequently add 2% to 3% to card payments, which cancels the rewards and then some — ask, and pay those by transfer. And be careful with timing: a spend requirement runs from account opening, so a deposit paid before the card arrives doesn't count toward it. Line the applications up with the payment schedule, and never let a bonus talk you into a purchase or a carried balance.
The honest caveat
Merchant coding is set by the payment networks, not by us: a store can change how it codes, a franchise can code differently from a corporate location, and an issuer can revise its exclusions without announcing it. Everything above comes from the printed terms in our maintained database, valued at our conservative point values — but the only way to know what a specific card pays on your charges is to score them. That is exactly what the optimizer does.
