The case for cash back
Cash back is worth exactly what it says: a penny a point, redeemed as a statement credit or deposit, with no expiry games and no learning curve. A 2% flat cash card is the simplest wallet that exists, and for a lot of people it beats a drawer full of points they never optimize. There's no such thing as a bad redemption with cash.
The case for points
Flexible bank points — Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou, Bilt — can be worth more than a cent when you move them to an airline or hotel partner and book the right award. That's where the eye-popping "business class for pennies" stories come from. But it only happens when you put in the effort and the award space exists. The honest tiebreaker
Be honest about the kind of redeemer you are. If you'll research award charts and transfer points, a flexible-points card can genuinely out-earn cash. If you want to swipe and forget, take the cash — a 1.5¢ point you always redeem at 1¢ is a 1¢ point. There's no shame in the simple answer; it's often the higher-value one in practice.
