Authorized users, explained
An authorized user gets a card on someone else's account: they can spend, but the primary cardholder owns the debt. It's a common way to share perks or help someone build credit — with real risks on both sides.

What an authorized user can and can't do
An authorized user (AU) gets their own card number and can make purchases, but they're not legally responsible for the balance — the primary account holder is. AUs usually can't make major account changes. Many cards charge nothing to add an AU; some premium cards charge a per-user fee in exchange for extra benefits like lounge access.
How it builds credit
Most issuers report the account to the authorized user's credit file, so the card's history — its age, limit and payment record — can appear on the AU's report and help their score. This is how parents give a child a credit head start. The key: it only helps if the account has a long, clean, low-utilization history. Add someone to a maxed-out or late-paying card and you can drag their score down instead.
The risks on both sides
The primary owes every charge the AU makes, so trust matters. The AU, in turn, inherits the primary's behavior: if the primary runs up the balance or pays late, it can hit the AU's credit too. Either party can usually end the arrangement — the primary removes the AU, or the AU asks to be removed and have the account taken off their report.
One thing to watch
Being added as an authorized user can count toward some issuer application rules, including Chase's 5/24. If you're planning your own applications, know that an AU account may show on your report and factor into approvals.
